Alzheimers disease accounts for 60% to 70% of cases of dementia. It’s a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and gets worse over time. The most common early symptom is short term memory loss. As the disease progresses symptoms can include problems with speech, disorientation, mood swing, loss of motivation, behavioural issues and not managing self care. As the persons health declines they often withdraw from family and society. Gradually they lose their bodily functions, ultimately leading to death. The cause of the disease is not easily understood. About 70% of it is believed to be genetic. The disease is believed to be from plaque and tangles in the brain.
No treatments stop or reverse the Alzheimers progression, some may temporarily improve symptoms though. People with the Alzheimers will become more dependant on others for assistance as the disease progresses placing a burden on the caregiver. Those pressures can include social, psychological, physical and economic elements.
